Unbeaten fighters Ryan Garcia (23–0) and Gervonta Davis (28–0) crossed paths in the ring on April 22, 2023, at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, and they were expected to provide a highly contested matchup between two fighters that had a competitive grudge, were currently in their primes, and were both battling for supremacy in boxing. Ultimately, the bout quickly became a one-sided affair instead of a thriller.

California native Ryan Garcia came into the fight brimming with confidence after rising to the professional ranks and defeating the opposition with his quick hand speed, fast movement, and devastating left hook. His skillset allowed him to register nineteen career knockouts throughout his professional career. Garcia came in with a height (1.74 M) and arm reach (178 cm) advantage when compared with the shorter (1.66 M) Gervonta Davis, who conceded all measurables to Garcia. Gervonta (Tank) Davis does not possess great stature and arm reach (171 cm), but those deficits were not enough to help Garcia get an edge during the fight.

At the beginning of the contest, nerves coursed through both fighters as they carefully assessed each other and were methodical at the opening moments in the first round. Garcia ramped up his activity and began working the jab effectively and connected with Davis consistently, and cruised to a decisive round one victory. His height and reach advantages troubled Davis, and it continued into the second round, where Garcia continued to land powerful combinations and maintained his aggressiveness. The tactic of stalking and being overly aggressive was detrimental to Garcia as the crafty Davis evaded a powerful left hook from Garcia and countered him with a crushing counter punch that caused Garcia to tumble to the canvas. Afterward, Davis claimed momentum in the fight and never relinquished it again.

Gervonta (Tank) Davis began his professional career in 2013, and he quickly started dominating opponents with sheer power. His punches dismantled the opposition like they collided head-on with an unmoveable object with high destructive force. The repeated blows leave his opposition bewildered, unconscious, or unwilling to continue the fight. His boxing brilliance has caused him issues finding a suitable rival during his career, but that has not stopped his drive as he has compiled numerous accolades in the sport, winning world championships at the lightweight, super lightweight, and super featherweight divisions.

Highlights between Davis and Garcia superfight.

Looking for a boxing rival with star power Ryan Garcia entered the fold because he is a talented fighter who has also established himself as a fan favorite, amassing 11 million followers on Instagram, 5.5 million followers on TikTok, and 1.45 million subscribers on YouTube. His popularity and skill made him an ideal candidate to rival Tank. However, the thoughts were premature as Garcia was thoroughly outmatched by Gervonta’s poise, experience, boxing IQ, and power to compete with him at the highest level. Garcia flashed moments during the fight, but Tank Davis ultimately ended the contest in the seventh round with a subtle body shot that forced Garcia to drop to his knees and thwart his attempt to continue the mega fight.

Despite the anticlimactic ending, the fight between Garcia and Davis was a spectacle that brought all the stars out to Vegas (Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Connor McGregor, Mike Tyson, Michael B. Jordan, etc.) and was very successful as the fight sold approximately 1.2 million pay per view buys, which was the most in boxing since Roy Jones Jr. fought Mike Tyson in 2020 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles California.
